Made in Portugal: Quality, Proximity and the True Cost of Small-Batch Production

Choosing where and how to produce a garment is an essential part of our work. For us, manufacturing in Portugal means supporting local production, benefiting from extensive textile expertise and maintaining greater control over every stage of the process.

Portugal has one of Europe’s most established textile industries. Its expertise covers everything from material selection and garment construction to finishing and quality control. This long-standing tradition allows us to create comfortable, durable and exceptionally well-finished garments.

The Benefits of Producing Closer to Home

Working in Portugal allows us to maintain a direct relationship with the people and workshops involved in production. This proximity makes communication easier and helps us oversee important details such as fit, stitching, finishing and durability.

The result is a garment of excellent quality. However, achieving this standard requires time, expertise and several rounds of testing before reaching the final product.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Materials

Not every garment requires the same fabric. We select each composition according to the intended use, feel and performance of the individual product.

Cotton plays an important role in some of our garments because of its softness, breathability and comfort. It is particularly suitable for T-shirts and other pieces designed to be worn for long periods.

We do not make general claims that apply to every item in our collection. Instead, we provide the specific composition and characteristics of each garment so that our customers receive clear and accurate information.

The Artwork Is Also Part of the Quality

Our illustrations are not a secondary element added at the end of the process. They are a fundamental part of the identity of every T-shirt.

When a design contains many colours, reproducing it accurately requires a more complex printing process. It is not simply a matter of sending the artwork and applying it directly to the garment. The file must be prepared, the colours separated, tests carried out and the final result adjusted to ensure that the tones, details and positioning are correct.

Our aim is to preserve the character of the original illustration as faithfully as possible. Simplifying a design or removing colours could reduce production costs, but it would also cause the artwork to lose depth, detail and personality.

Why Printing with Many Colours Costs More

With techniques such as screen printing, each colour in an illustration generally requires its own screen, a separate ink and an individual printing stage. This means that a six-colour illustration requires considerably more preparation and more passes than a design containing only one or two colours.

Every colour must also be perfectly aligned. When an illustration contains fine details or similar tones, the screens must be registered with particular precision. Each T-shirt must pass through the different stages without the artwork losing definition.

The process also includes preparing the inks, carrying out colour tests, setting up the machinery, drying or curing the print and inspecting every finished garment.

The cost, therefore, does not increase simply because more ink is used. The greatest impact comes from the technical work required to prepare, print and carefully control each colour.

Although the exact process may vary depending on the printing technique, the principle remains the same: a complex illustration with many colours and fine details requires more time, preparation and quality control than a simple design.

The Challenge of Producing Small Quantities

When launching a project, ordering thousands of T-shirts is not usually a realistic option. It would require a very large initial investment and could leave us with a significant amount of stock before knowing the true level of demand.

However, many printing costs are fixed. Colour separation, screen or machinery preparation, testing and adjustments are necessary whether the production run is small or large.

With a large order, these costs are spread across hundreds or thousands of T-shirts. With a small production run, they are divided between far fewer garments, making the cost of each individual item considerably higher.

For example, preparing a multicoloured illustration requires almost the same initial work whether we print 30 T-shirts or 300. The difference is that, in the second case, the setup cost is spread across ten times as many garments.

Producing More Cheaply Does Not Always Mean Producing Better

Ordering large quantities would reduce the cost per garment, but it would also increase the financial risk. If a particular design did not receive the expected demand, a significant portion of the production could remain unsold in storage.

For this reason, we prefer to begin with carefully controlled production runs. Although each T-shirt costs more to produce, this approach allows us to understand our customers’ response, make informed adjustments to future editions and avoid producing far more garments than necessary.

It also enables us to preserve the complexity of the original illustrations. Rather than reducing each design to one or two colours simply to lower costs, we aim to reproduce its visual richness and remain faithful to the intention behind the original artwork.

What the Price of Each T-Shirt Represents

The price of one of our T-shirts reflects much more than the garment itself and the ink used to print it. It also represents:

The quality of the selected materials.

The expertise of the professionals involved in production.

The creation and preparation of each illustration.

The separation and precise adjustment of the colours.

The tests carried out before production begins.

The technical setup required for printing.

The finishing and quality-control process.

The decision to begin with carefully considered quantities.

We are not trying to compete with T-shirts manufactured by the thousands and printed with very simple designs. Our goal is to offer carefully made garments featuring illustrations full of personality, with a level of quality that can be appreciated in both the fabric and the finished print.

Transparency in Every Product

We believe that communicating clearly is just as important as taking care over the manufacturing process. That is why we provide the specific composition and characteristics of every item.

Manufacturing close to home, working with detailed multicoloured illustrations and producing carefully controlled quantities comes at a higher cost. In return, we can pay close attention to every detail, preserve the richness of each design and develop the project responsibly.

Behind every T-shirt are many decisions that are not always visible. Explaining them is our way of showing the product’s true value and the work required to transform an illustration into a well-made garment.

Why a White T-Shirt Never Goes Out of Style

Some clothes belong to a specific era. Others seem to survive them all. The white T-shirt belongs to the second group.

It has gone from military uniforms to Hollywood, from rock stages to California beaches, from skate culture to streetwear — and eventually into almost everyone’s wardrobe.

The fit has changed. The fabric has changed. The way we wear it and what it represents have changed.

But the white T-shirt is still here.

Maybe because it has never tried too hard.

From Underwear to a Symbol of Rebellion

For much of its history, the T-shirt wasn’t even supposed to be seen. It was a simple, functional piece worn as underwear, eventually becoming part of military uniforms and everyday workwear.

Then Hollywood took it outside.

In the 1950s, actors like Marlon Brando and James Dean helped turn something completely ordinary into a symbol of youth and rebellion. A white T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and not much else.

No logo required.

That was exactly the point: it looked effortless.

And maybe that’s one of the reasons why, more than seventy years later, we’re still trying to achieve exactly the same thing.

California Changed the Rules

If the 1950s made the white T-shirt cool, the decades that followed gave every subculture a chance to make it their own.

California was particularly good at it.

Surfers, skaters, musicians and artists began using the T-shirt as a kind of wearable canvas. Illustrations appeared alongside logos from small board shapers, local surf shops, brands and competitions. Graphics became bigger, louder and increasingly distinctive.

A white T-shirt was no longer just a white T-shirt.

It could tell people where you came from, what you listened to or what you did after school.

Throughout the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, surf and skate culture developed a visual language of its own: saturated colors, hand-drawn lettering, oversized illustrations, flames, sharks, skeletons and graphics that probably wouldn’t make it through most marketing meetings today.

Which is exactly why they were so good.

A T-Shirt Could Also Say What Music You Listened To

At some point, wearing a T-shirt stopped being just about getting dressed.

It became a statement.

Bands quickly realized that a T-shirt could carry their world far beyond the walls of a venue. Punk, hardcore, metal, hip-hop, grunge — every scene developed its own visual codes.

T-shirts began collecting concerts, washes, holes and memories.

And something interesting happened:

The older they got, the better they looked.

A shirt bought one afternoon could become, twenty years later, something almost impossible to reproduce.

The cotton softened. The white stopped being completely white. The ink faded. The collar changed shape slightly.

Imperfections became part of the garment.

Maybe that’s why we spend so much time today trying to recreate a vintage look that once simply required ten years of actually wearing the thing.

The ’90s Made Everything a Little Bigger

The fit of a T-shirt can tell you almost as much about an era as the graphic printed on it.

The simple, fitted silhouette of the 1950s gradually evolved. Then the ’90s arrived and everything got bigger.

Sleeves dropped lower. Shoulders became more relaxed. Bodies became wider. Instead of following your silhouette, the T-shirt started falling loosely over it.

Skateboarding, hip-hop and later streetwear pushed that idea even further.

A slightly oversized white tee, faded jeans and sneakers became almost a uniform.

Then fashion did what fashion always does. Slim fits returned, disappeared again, and eventually relaxed silhouettes came back around.

Because fashion is constantly changing.

The white T-shirt simply changes with it.

From Basic to Canvas

There’s another reason it works so well: a white T-shirt can be absolutely nothing, or it can be everything.

Left completely blank, it might be one of the most anonymous pieces of clothing ever made.

Add a graphic and everything changes.

White fabric works almost like a blank sheet of paper. It doesn’t compete with the artwork, allowing colors, lettering and illustrations to take over.

That’s why so many memorable graphics have ended up on white tees.

And it’s why a great graphic T-shirt can tell you quite a lot about the person wearing it without needing a paragraph to explain itself.

The Perfect T-Shirt Probably Shouldn’t Look Perfect

We have a thing for T-shirts that look like they’ve lived a little.

Not necessarily ripped or artificially destroyed. Just clothes that become yours over time.

The cotton changes. The graphic loses some intensity. A few marks appear. The fabric starts falling differently on the body.

It stops looking brand new.

There’s something particularly good about a T-shirt that looks like you could have found it in a California surf shop in 1989, forgotten about it in a drawer for years, and pulled it back out this summer.

That balance between new and familiar is difficult to get right.

And maybe that’s part of the magic.

So Why Does It Never Go Out of Style?

Because it has never really belonged to just one style.

James Dean wore it. Surfers and skaters made it their own. Bands turned it into merchandise. Hip-hop changed its proportions. Streetwear reinterpreted it once again.

And tomorrow, someone else will do the same.

Wear it with faded jeans, swim shorts, work pants or underneath a jacket. It can cost almost nothing or become a vintage piece someone spends years trying to find.

It can be completely blank or carry a huge graphic across the back.

But underneath it all, the idea remains almost exactly the same.

Cotton. Crew neck. Two sleeves. White.

It doesn’t need much more.

And maybe that’s the secret behind the things that truly last:

They don’t need to constantly reinvent themselves to remain relevant

Shark Attack® was born in Cairns, Australia, during the 1980s. What began as a small gift shop for tourists soon grew into something much bigger.

Its original designs, bold sense of humour and strong connection to the ocean quickly captured people’s attention. As demand increased, more Shark Attack® stores opened across Australia, all sharing the same identity: a passion for the sea, the coastal lifestyle and the protection of our oceans.

A Brand Ahead of Its Time

From the beginning, the founders’ vision extended far beyond Australia. Their goal was to create an international community through a network of franchises united by a shared love for the sea and a commitment to protecting it.

Long before environmental awareness became a global movement, Shark Attack® was already using humour, creativity and bold graphics to highlight the serious threats facing our oceans.

Its T-shirts were more than clothing. Each design carried a message about overfishing, pollution, whaling or the destruction of marine ecosystems. Shark Attack® found an original way to address important environmental issues: making people smile while also encouraging them to think.

How Shark Attack® Became Part of Our Family

In the early 1990s, during a business trip to California, our father discovered Shark Attack® at a trade show. He had travelled there for a completely different reason, but the brand immediately caught his attention.

A lifelong shark enthusiast and ocean lover, he bought several T-shirts. He was instantly drawn to their originality, humour and, above all, the message behind the artwork.

After staying in contact with the company, he acquired the European franchise rights and became the official distributor of Shark Attack® across Europe.

For years, he introduced the collections to surf shops and retailers throughout the continent. Through his work, Shark Attack® developed a loyal following of people who connected with its designs and shared its passion for the ocean.

A Legacy That Never Disappeared

Over time, the original company gradually disappeared. For our family, however, the Shark Attack® story never truly ended.

Our father carefully preserved the original illustrations, graphics and everything else that gave the brand its unique personality. Shark Attack® became an important part of our childhood.

My brother and I grew up surrounded by its designs. We wore the T-shirts, travelled with the collections and spent countless weekends in the warehouse. We watched our father build and develop a project in which he genuinely believed.

The brand became much more than a business. It became part of our family history and shaped our own connection with the ocean.

Why Shark Attack® Is Returning

More than 30 years later, many of the environmental issues highlighted by Shark Attack® have become even more urgent. Pollution, overfishing, whaling and the destruction of marine habitats continue to threaten the future of our oceans.

The messages that once made people smile through humour and creative artwork now represent some of the greatest environmental challenges of our time.

As divers and lifelong ocean lovers, we believe that now is the right time to bring Shark Attack® back. We want to revive its iconic artwork, preserve its history and give new life to its message.

The return of Shark Attack® is a tribute to our father’s work, to the vision of its original founders and to everyone who feels a special connection with the sea.

Sharks, one of the oldest species (Their earliest evidence dates back to over 400 million years ago, in the Devonian period—an era often referred to as the ‘Age of Sharks’ due to their prevalence during that time) and essential to the balance of marine ecosystems are currently in danger of extinction, due to overfishing, habitat destruction and illegal hunting for their fins ( a popular dish in many Asian countries ).

These predators play a crucial role in the health of the oceans, regulating the populations of other species and maintaining the balance in marine ecosystems.

It is essential to act to protect them, not only for their ecological value, but also for the well-being of the oceans and, ultimately, for the survival of all living things that depend on them, including humans. Illegal trade in shark fins and unsustainable fishing must be stopped, and conservation policies that ensure the protection of these animals must be promoted.

The situation of sharks is serious, but not irreversible. As consumers, we can also contribute by supporting sustainable fishing products and avoiding those that contribute to their destructive exploitation. The survival of these species depends largely on the collective actions we take to preserve them.

As the legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau said: “People protect what they love”. With Shark Attack, we want to convey just that: a love and fascination for these super predators.

Each of our designs respects the album originals that made the brand famous, with that rebellious and fun aesthetic that has always been its hallmark. But now giving priority to designs with environmental impact, which the brand already transmitted in its origins.

In addition to the meaningful message we want to convey, it is also important to mention the quality of the product we offer. All our t-shirts are made in Portugal, a country recognized worldwide for the quality of its cotton and its ability to manufacture durable and comfortable garments.

Each Shark Attack T-shirt is a unique piece, combining original design, sustainability and ethical production, respectful of both the people who make them and the environment.

If this project, so dear to our hearts, comes to fruition, we will be in contact with shark conservation and environmental organizations and groups to help in any way we can. Shark Attack is not just a t-shirt brand; it is a platform to raise awareness and do our part to protect sharks. We are committed to being more than just a fashion trend; we want to be part of a movement that promotes ocean conservation, and with it, the message of love, respect and protection for sharks and all marine life.

It’s a comeback with a cause, a brand that stays true to its origins, but also knows that times have changed and that now, more than ever, we need to act to preserve our planet.

So whether you’re a vintage fashion lover, a nostalgic of the 80’s and 90’s, or just someone who wants to wear a t-shirt that makes a statement, Shark Attack invites you to join this cause. Because, as always, what you wear should say more than just “fashion” – join our team and help us spread this message before it’s too late!

As a Sioux proverb says: “When the blood in your veins returns to the sea, and the dust in your bones returns to the ground, perhaps you will remember that this land does not belong to you, but that you belong to this land”.

The Sioux vision of caring for Mother Earth as a loan to future generations invites us to reflect on our relationship with the environment and urges us to take responsibility, upon which our collective future depends.
